Mardan Created history as the first Singaporean to win on The European Tour when he held off the defending champion Nick Dougherty of England for a one stroke victory in the 2006 Singapore Masters at his home course of Laguna National Golf and Country Club. Victory secured a two year exemption to The European Tour from the event jointly sanctioned with the Asian Tour. Achieved his best finish since that victory with joint second place in the 2007 Celtic Manor Wales Open. Had made his winning breakthrough in 2004 with victory in India on the Asian Tour. Showed tremendous promise during his amateur career, which was highlighted by his individual victory in the Putra Cup in 1993, and helped Singapore land the team title. When he turned professional in 1994, he enjoyed a dream start in the paid ranks as he scored a hole in one to claim a luxury car on his debut. In 1997, he shot to prominence at Royal Troon when he became the first Singaporean to qualify for The Open Championship. Says his decision to train under Australian coach Kel Llewellyn and yoga has enhanced his career.

BMW PGA Championship
2008-05-22
The BMW PGA starts this week at Wentworth and is always a special time on the calendar year for the European Tour and Players.
With a top class field and big prize fund it is sure to be an exciting week of golf. The West Course Wentworth is as tough as they come especially with Ernie Els lengthening the course and adding new bunkers. The shorter hitters will have to have their short games in top form while the bigger hitters have a slight advantage, it is definitely a power hitters course but as history has shown us it's not always the long hitters who win here at Wentworth.
Bradley Dredge who had a great finish last week in the Irish Open said "he is looking forward to this week where the course suits his style of game and feels he can really contend over the week".
GMI has Twelve players in the PGA Championship this week and with a couple of victories in the last couple of months from Damien and Peter we are wishing all our players the very best of luck.

Peter Lawrie Wins in Spain
2008-05-06
Peter Lawrie made it a hat-trick of Irish victories in three consecutive weeks after his dramatic play-off victory over home favourite Ignacio Garrido in the Open de España at Real Club de Golf de Sevilla.
Lawrie’s maiden European Tour title – secured at the second extra hole thanks largely to a superb bunker shot – followed the breakthrough victory of his close friend and compatriot Damien McGrane at the Volvo China Open, and Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke’s first win for two-and-a-half years at last week’s BMW Asian Open.
McGrane – his room-mate on Tour – had turned the Volvo China Open into a procession, winning by nine shots, but Lawrie was made to work far harder for his victory in soaring temperatures in Seville.
Sitting on eleven under par after 12 holes of his final round, Lawrie’s chances of victory appeared remote. But four birdies in his last six holes saw the 34 year old installed as the clubhouse leader on 15 under par.
Overnight leader Garrido – playing in the final group with compatriot Miguel Angel Jiménez – had toiled on the front nine, dropping three shots; but a revival after the turn meant he needed a birdie on the 72nd hole to take the tournament to a play-off.
The Spaniard, whose father Antonio won the Spanish Open in 1972, duly rolled in a superb 30ft putt on the 18th green to ensure there would be more drama on an already eventful day in Seville.
And so to the play-off, with both men finding the fairway off the 18th tee. Lawrie landed his approach shot around 30 feet from the pin, whilst Garrido hit a sublime shot to within six feet of the hole.
Lawrie miraculously sunk his putt – via the left hand edge of the cup – to put the pressure back on Garrido. The Spaniard duly followed him in for birdie, meaning the pair returned to the 18th tee.
This time Lawrie found a fairway bunker, but found the heart of the green with a superbly struck eight iron from the sand.
In contrast, Garrido could only look on in horror as his approach pitched at pin height, but spun viciously back into the lake guarding the green.
And so Lawrie, after Garrido had pitched on for four, was left with two putts to seal his maiden European Tour victory and claim a £262,000 winner’s cheque which saw him climb from 88th to 12th on the Order of Merit.
The Dubliner, who in 2003 became the first Irishman to win the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award, said: “It feels unbelievable – I’m lost for words. I thought I’d already won the tournament once, because I didn’t think Ignacio would hole that putt on the 18th.
“So I had to regroup for the play-off, and ended up hitting one of the best putts of my life to keep myself in contention. It was a one in a hundred chance, and luckily it dropped in. I guess you have to get the rub of the green if you’re going to win a golf tournament these days.
“I knew if I got things going today, I would have a decent chance of winning. I’ve been playing quite well lately, without really getting my rewards, so maybe it was just my turn today. It was nice to add another trophy for the Irish contingent. Damien [McGrane], my room-mate on Tour, started the ball rolling in China, then Darren [Clarke] picked up the baton last week.
“My Putting was key to this week. I have been putting very well in recent weeks and I knew I was close to making a breakthrough. I have been practising hard on my short game over the last few months at my local club Castleknock Golf Club, the greens are fantastic, which has helped my short game come on leaps and bounds. I would doubt there are better greens to practise on in Ireland”.
“I will be trying to keep this run going, as I have set myself some other goals for the remainder of the season”.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my sponsors for their continued support, they are Castleknock Golf Club, Stuburt, Arachas Insurance and Srixon”.

Damien McGrane wins in China
2008-04-22
Ireland’s Damien McGrane defied the elements to claim his maiden European Tour title with a convincing nine stroke victory in the Volvo China Open at Beijing CBD International Golf Club.
After the calm of the first three days came the storm as an incessant downpour battered the players on the final day but McGrane was unfazed and remained completely in control as his opponents fell away.
For three days the Irishman putted beautifully and that touch stayed with him through the final round as time and again he saved par while others faltered. A closing round of 73 for a ten under par total of 278 left him nine clear of the English pair of Simon Griffiths and Oliver Wilson and Frenchman Michael Lorenzo-Vera.
From the outset it was a war of attrition in China’s Olympic City and on a day when 20 players started the day under par but only four finished in red figures, McGrane was effectively the last man standing.
Starting the final round with a three stroke cushion, McGrane dropped shots on the second and eighth but he was making fewer errors than those chasing and landed a killer blow when he holed a chip shot from the edge of the bunker on the ninth. Another birdie at the 11th followed and there was no looking back and by the time he stood on the 18th tee he had the luxury of a ten stroke lead. A closing bogey did nothing to dampen his spirits.
“I’m absolutely overjoyed,” said McGrane. “It is my first win and, to be honest, it is an amazing feeling to have won my first tournament. I have been thinking about winning one tournament for so long and this week everything went my way. I had good fortune, loved the course and the bad weather didn’t put me off my game today. Everything I have ever expected and now I have my first win on this Tour which is big for me.”
McGrane putted sensationally all week and his tap in on the 72 hole was only his 96th putt of the week, statistics which underpinned his success.
“My short game this week was excellent and I knew if the weather turned, everyone would need their short game and would rely on it. I was lucky in that I knew going out I had the short game required and I made the most of my opportunities and there wasn’t many out there. My putting was good and for that one reason I have won this Volvo China Open.
“Anyone with any sense wouldn’t have gone out in that. It was one of those days where everyone had to knuckle down and do the best they can. It was extremely difficult and I hit woods and rescues into all the par fours. It really was a tough day in the office. But my putting was good and you had to putt well for pars let alone birdies. It came my way today, the weather if not on my side, helped stop other players making a charge at my lead. Once I made as many pars as possible the tournament was mine and the Volvo China Open was mine.”
For the record, he became the seventh first-time winner in his 169th European Tour event with comfortably the largest winning margin of the season. Now he plans on spending some of the €232,121 first prize on a holiday to Antarctica.
“Every player who plays The European Tour, their dream is to win and you have to win once,” he added. “I have won once so the world is my oyster now and hopefully I can go on and win more events. Even defend my title successfully next year. It is great to travel worldwide now and no matter where you win in the world it is sweet and my first win, it is what I have worked for since I was a little boy.”
Damien has been a great player for a long time and has come close to winning on several occasions. But with this win under his belt we are sure that Damien can progress to greater heights.
GMI could not be more proud of Damien on his first win on the European Tour and we would like to congratulate him, as he truly deserves it.
GMI currently has 16 players under management and Damien joins the list of 7 players from our portfolio who have won on the European Tour.
